For so much of the game, the Washington Capitals had held Brad Marchand in check. Matching the Capitals’ fourth line with the Boston Bruins’ prime scoring threats, Marchand had managed just 0.01 individual expected goals for, per Natural Stat Trick, through three periods.
But Marchand and the Bruins needed just 39 seconds of overtime Monday before his one-time from the right circle beat Craig Anderson and propelled Boston to a 4-3 win while leveling the first-round series at one game apiece.
On Saturday, Washington was the team celebrating a game-winning goal in overtime, with Nic Dowd breaking through to give his team a one-game advantage.
