NEW YORK — If this was a statement game against the Washington Capitals, the New York Rangers showed that being opportunistic and having Henrik Lundqvist in goal is good enough to win.
Lundqvist made 32 saves, Kevin Hayes snapped a tie late in the first period, and the Rangers capitalized on every mistake to beat the Washington Capitals, 5-2, on Tuesday night in their first game since the teams’ Eastern Conference semifinal series last spring.
“It’s good to know we can win without playing our best,” Lundqvist said.
