With around two minutes left in the first period, a swarm of red jerseys surrounded Tampa Bay Lightning center Brayden Point, but Capitals defenseman John Carlson narrowly missed his check. Carlson’s whiff was just enough room for Point to race past the Capitals’ blue line and sneak by goaltender Braden Holtby.
As the puck went around Holtby’s leg, Point tacked on Tampa Bay’s third goal of the game — his second of the contest — in a 4-2 Capitals loss Tuesday to the Lightning.
The loss was another result of another period spiraling out of control.
