Daniel Winnik was 'shocked' to be traded to Capitals

Around 10:45 p.m., a Toronto number Daniel Winnik didn’t recognize flashed on his phone. He figured it was Maple Leafs General Manager Lou Lamoriello and braced for what came next, having done this before.

Lamariello told Winnik that he was involved in a transaction, a trade that sent him and a 2016 fifth-round pick to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Brooks Laich, Connor Carrick and a 2016 second-round pick.

“I wasn’t quite sure if I was going to get traded or where,” Winnik said on a conference call. “I definitely was not expecting to come to the Capitals.
