The Washington Capitals were forced to make a huge decision on July 1st. They tried as hard as they could to bring back fan favorite and valuable veteran forward Joel Ward, but Ward wanted a four-year deal at the time. That was a length that the Caps could not give him. Decision time was likely in the afternoon. The Capitals could go with free agent forward Justin Williams, winner of three Stanley Cups, or they could hold out for Ward. The Caps decided that Justin Williams was the better player so they signed him late that evening.
