The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk to a one-year, $800,000 deal. TvR is a righthanded defenseman who can provide depth on the blueline for the Caps. The 29-year-old hit free agency after a bit of a down season in Raleigh, but he is still a solid bottom-pairing defenseman.
TSN’s Frank Seravalli was first with the contract news:
This acquisition puts John Carlson, Justin Schultz (acquired yesterday), Nick Jensen, and now van Riemsdyk on the right side of Washington’s blueline. With a crowded left side of Dmitry Orlov, Brenden Dillon, Jonas Siegenthaler, Martin Fehervary, and Michal Kempny (presumably on LTIR) and a tight salary cap, a move of some kind is likely on the horizon.
