Capitals sign free agent Dan Ellis as No. 3 goaltender

Filling the goaltending void created by the T.J. Oshie deal, the Washington Capitals signed veteran Dan Ellis to a one-year, two-way deal Saturday morning, presumably to serve in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears. The 35-year-old appeared in eight games with the Florida Panthers last season and, in joining the seventh organization of his career, is expected to compete for starter’s minutes in the minor leagues, against whichever netminder loses the backup competition in Washington.

With the Capitals, Ellis reunites with Coach Barry Trotz and goaltending coach Mitch Korn, for whom he played 110 games at the start of his career, including an NHL-leading .
