Capitals sign center Derek Roy to professional tryout contract

In a no-risk move aimed to bolster their depth up the middle for training camp, the Washington Capitals have signed center Derek Roy to a professional tryout contract, according to Mike Vogel of the team Web site.

A former second-round draft pick entering his 12th NHL season with 738 appearances to his name, Roy spent 26 games with Nashville before getting shipped to Edmonton for Mark Arcobello in late December. For the Oilers, his sixth stop since 2011-12, Roy registered 22 points in 46 games, and figures to challenge for a bottom-six role in Washington, where the center situation remains up for grabs.
