Capitals get first taste of coach's challenge with disallowed goal

After watching other NHL coaches use their new power to appeal blown goalie interference and offside calls that lead to a goal, Capitals Coach Barry Trotz wanted the replay of every goal to be shown in Verizon Center as fast as possible, hoping it would help him make a decision if he wanted to challenge a goal.

But Washington’s first experience with the new coach’s challenge didn’t go in its favor, as San Jose Coach Peter DeBoer’s appeal successfully waved off a Capitals goal by defenseman Dmitry Orlov because of interference by Jay Beagle. Washington was losing 3-0 in the second period when the goal was overturned.
