Another Game 7 looming, Capitals find confidence from their comeback

As the Washington Capitals stared into their immediate future, which after Sunday night’s 4-3 loss to the New York Rangers now very much resembled their haunted past, they all invoked the nebulous concept of character, either to fuel themselves forward or comfort themselves in the present. Coach Barry Trotz said the word five times during his postgame news conference and each player who spoke, taking their cues from their bench loss, mentioned it too. They would hang their hats on a wild third-period comeback, when a three-goal deficit almost began a tie game, but with a winner-take-all Game 7 lurking in three days, they would mostly look inward for confidence.
