Friday was almost one year to the day that Alex Ovechkin said, “We’re not going to be suck this year,” a new Ovi-ism that rivaled “Russian machine never breaks” and became a rallying cry at the 2018 Stanley Cup parade in Washington.
At the Washington Capitals’ 2018 media day, Ovechkin updated it, for anyone wondering if the team was happy to have just one Cup win.
“Not suck back-to-back,” he said when prompted to update last year’s motto.
Ovechkin has wrapped up the “Summer of Ovi,” in which he led the franchise to its first Stanley Cup title, led his teammates in partying with the Cup as hard as they wanted, and then became a father as his wife gave birth to the couple’s first child, a boy named Sergei.
