NEW YORK — Nicklas Backstrom actually found himself happy his longtime teammate hadn’t scored another goal. The Washington Capitals needed Alex Ovechkin’s two goals against the New York Rangers, as his second lifted them to a 4-3 overtime win, but Backstrom was pleased that Ovechkin’s next goal would have to wait.
That would be the 500th goal of Ovechkin’s career, and with the Capitals home for two games, Ovechkin is poised to reach the milestone in D.C.
“Hopefully, he gets a chance to do it at home in front of our fans and maybe his family and friends,” Backstrom said.
