Alex Ovechkin Is Power Play King! Though It Took a While to Know for Sure

(Caps Outsider)

Congratulations to Alex Ovechkin, who scored his 275th power play goal, which is tops all time. He passed Dave Andreychuk, who played 409 more games – about five full seasons – more than Ovi did.

The record-setting goal wasn’t so obvious, though, as the puck went in as the power play was expiring. At first it seemed like a power play goal, then it didn’t, but the official scorekeeper determined it was a power play goal, then it wasn’t, and then it was.

This also shows how certain stats can be misleading, as the Caps’ power play has been awful lately, and a goal even a fraction of a second after the power play expired would have been another ‘failed’ power play even though the scenario played out the same.
