Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL’s First Star of the month. You’d think, based on how good Ovi is, that this is an award he would have won quite a bit in his career. While he has won it seven times, statistically speaking, that’s not as out-of-this-world as we’ve come to expect from Ovi. In other words, he’s won the Rocket Richard trophy more times – 8 – than he’s won First Star of the month.
Ovi has, however, been the runner up for the award twice, and came in third twice. Also, the award didn’t come about until 2006-07, one year after Ovi’s rookie season.
