The Washington Capitals announced the recall of Nate Schmidt, the AHL’s postseason leading scorer among defensemen, on Monday.
The move is thought to be an insurance move for defenseman Tim Gleason's health, who was injured during the first period of Game 6 on Sunday against the New York Rangers.
“They got banged up and both had equipment problems and they got banged up a little bit,” head coach Barry Trotz said of Gleason and Andre Burakovsky, who was also hurt in the loss. “They missed little stretches of time.”
Washington previous recalled Schmidt during the Eastern Conference semifinals for Game 3 with Gleason health in question, but when Gleason suited up, Schmidt served as a healthy scratch. Gleason is officially listed as questionable for Wednesday's Game 7.
