Washington Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen is listed as day-to-day after an injury sustained during Sunday’s 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers, and he missed practice Monday as a result.
Niskanen suffered a lower-body injury at an undetermined point in Sunday's game, but it didn't stop him from playing 22 minutes and 3 seconds without missing a shift. Niskanen took a hard shot to his ankle during a 5-on-3 penalty kill situation, but the team hasn't confirmed if that was the play that caused his injury.
Niskanen will travel to Toronto with the team, and coach Barry Trotz is giving him some additional time to heal before he makes a decision on his status for Wednesday. Niskanen hasn't missed a game for the Caps since signing a seven-year, $40.25 million contract in July, and he's averaging 22:25 minutes per game, second on the team.
