University President Nathan Hatch presented his vision of Wake Forest in his annual state of the university address on Oct. 6. The speech, which was held in Scales’ Brendel Recital Hall, started at 4 p.m. before a crowd full of almost exclusively faculty and administrators.
Hatch stressed his administration’s previous accomplishments and hopes for the future. Central to Hatch’s speech was what he described as the university’s “creative tensions.” Hatch asserted that, though the university community has a “common sense of who we are,” Wake Forest maintains a number of conflicting identities — a liberal arts and research university, a progressive and conservative campus and a regional and national brand.
