We all know the Panama Canal as a remarkable engineering feat resulting from United States economic interests. Panama, however, was not the only potential location for a canal in the early 1900’s.
The United States also considered constructing a canal through Nicaragua to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for greatly improved shipping between the coasts and Asia. The idea for constructing a canal through Nicaragua has been revived by the Chinese company, the Hong Kong Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Group (HKND). There have been many concerns raised over this project and its negative impact on the environment and the Nicaraguan people.
