WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) Steve Johnson and 2014 finalist Jerzy Janowicz of Poland won second-round matches at the Winston-Salem Open on Tuesday.
Johnson, one of three Americans left in the final tuneup before next week's U.S. Open, beat Australia's Sam Groth 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1 at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. Janowicz needed just under 71 minutes to eliminate defending champion Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2. Last year, Rosol rallied past Janowicz 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5.
In other matches, Chinese Taipei's Yen-Hsun Lu upset fifth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-3, 6-3; Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic beat Slovakia's Martin Klizan 6-3, 6-4; and Argentina's Diego Schwartzman rallied from a set down to defeat Spain's Pablo Andujar 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
