The No. 24 Virginia Tech Hokies defeated the Miami Hurricanes 80-78 on Tuesday evening in Cassell Coliseum to move to 8-1 on the season and 2-0 in ACC play.
The Hokies were considerable favorites entering the game, but Miami kept the pressure on Virginia Tech all night. Tech trailed in the first half before a big run just before the half gave the Hokies a nine-point lead at halftime.
Tech came out hot in the second half, building the lead up to 17 points at one time, but the Hurricanes kept coming back. The ‘Canes hit 10 three-pointers and had an opportunity to tie the game late when Isaiah Wong’s shot rimmed out, and the Hokies got the rebound to preserve a two-point win.
