The Hokies were hot on the mound and at the plate in the first two innings. Despite a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, Tech found its groove at the plate in the top of the second.
Duke’s junior starter Ryan Higgins started the second by striking out senior Gehrig Ebel. But after four straight outs to start the game, Higgins walked four Hokies in a row to score senior Eddie Michletti Sr. for the first run of the game.
Higgins was taken out following the walk, but Virginia Tech’s patient approach to the plate sparked its big second inning.
