Virginia women’s basketball coach JoAnne Boyle announces retirement

Just two days after her Virginia Cavaliers were knocked out of the NCAA tournament by defending champions South Carolina, UVA women’s basketball head coach JoAnne Boyle announced her retirement from coaching.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Boyle said, “Due to a family matter that may require more time away from the program, I am not able to dedicate the time I need to our team. For that reason, it is best for me to step aside.”

No successor was immediately named.

The Cavaliers were more than 30 games over .500 for Boyle’s time in Charlottesville, going 129-98.
