On December 14, 2014, the Virginia Men's Soccer team culminated at the summit of the college world with hardware in hand. It was a thrilling, defensive, strategic game in which the16th-seeded Hoos ousted second-seeded UCLA (after earlier beating top-seeded Notre Dame) in penalty kicks to win the program's seventh national title.
The title led to some clamor from critics as to whether Virginia's strategy of playing tight defense to bring the game to PKs was against the spirit of the sport.
