Virginia hires BYU’s Mendenhall to be new head coach

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia has hired Bronco Mendenhall away from BYU to be the Cavaliers’ new head football coach.

Virginia made the surprising announcement Friday. There had been numerous reports about various coaches such as Mark Richt and Sonny Dykes being linked to the vacancy, but Mendenhall’s name had never come up.

Mendenhall was in his 11th season with the Cougars. He was 99-42 with the Cougars, taking them to a bowl game every season.

Virginia finished 4-8 this season and fired Mike London after six seasons, during which he had only one winning record.
