The Virginia Cavaliers’ Shane Cohen clocked 1:44.97 to win in the 800m NCAA national championship race on Friday — his first Division I title. And he did it in the classic Cohen way: with a crazy burst in the final leg.
Cohen, who achieved a new PR in his championship race, hit the gas in the last 100m after trailing the pack around the far turn. His strong kick to take the lead mimics his performance in his semifinal win on Wednesday, where he earned first in his heat with 1:46.94.
