UVA’s Kate Douglass wins silver, Alex Walsh disqualified in Olympic 200m IM

Two Virginia Cavaliers — Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh — swam in the women’s 200m individual medley on Saturday with both nearly reaching the podium.

Douglass earned silver with a time of 2:06.92 with Walsh close behind her with a third place finish.

Unfortunately, Walsh was soon determined to have an illegal turn from backstroke to breaststroke, costing her the bronze medal. Australia’s Kaylee McKeown, having finished fourth, was announced as the bronze medalist, clocking 2:08.08. Canada won gold, with Summer McTosh’s 2:06.56.

Walsh, the sister of fellow Olympian and Virginia Cavalier Gretchen Walsh, won silver in the same event in Tokyo, second to Douglass.
