Virginia Cavaliers baseball alum Andrew Abbott (‘21) was the saving grace for the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday against the San Diego Padres, serving seven shutout innings in 83 pitches for a much needed 2-0 win to open the series.
Abbot, now in his second season in Cincinnati, is establishing himself as a consistent starting pitcher during the team’s painful stretch. Riddled with injuries, the Reds entered the series with a 3-11 record for their tour out West, losing consecutive series against the Giants, Diamondbacks, and Dodgers.
Allowing only four hits, and one walk, Abbott’s performance lowered his ERA to 2.
