Malik Zaire undergoes ankle surgery, eyes spring return

During Saturday’s win over the Virginia Cavaliers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Malik Zaire went down with a serious ankle injury. Zaire suffered a broken ankle and underwent surgery on Sunday morning.

Currently, Zaire is targeting a return to the team in the spring.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly is optimistic about Zaire’s ability to return to 100 percent in time for the start of the 2016 college football season.

Kizer completed 8-of-12 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns — including the game-winner.

In his absence, redshirt freshman DeShone Kizer took over under center.
