Virginia Cavaliers offensive coordinator Des Kitchings has never hid the fact that he wants a run-first offense. His roots all come from the ground game, having been the running backs coach for NC State, South Carolina, and most recently, the Atlanta Falcons.
The problem is that in his first two years in Charlottesville, the ‘Hoos have never been able to rely on a workhorse that can consistently move the chains. In fact, they have not had somebody go for even 400 yards on the ground in either season. It’s been quite the opposite of what Kitchings wants, an offense almost entirely carried by the quarterback.
