The Virginia Cavaliers offensive line had what can generously be considered an up and down season in 2023. It had moments of getting absolutely manhandled, specifically early on (see: Tennessee game). There were also a few instances down the stretch where they came through in a big way (see: North Carolina game).
Overall, however, the numbers do not look great. Much of the reason for the running back struggles was UVA’s inability to win in the trenches. Per CollegeFootballData, the Cavaliers finished 90th in the FBS in line yards per carry, which is an adjusted stat that emphasizes the runners ability to gain the first handful of yards as opposed to “breakaway yards”.
