Can UVA football’s defensive line bounce back from a brutal 2023 season?

To put it as politely as possible, the Virginia Cavaliers defensive line was like a screen door on a submarine in the 2023 season, completely ineffective. They were one of the worst units in the country, averaging less than one sack per game (11 sacks on the season) and forfeiting an abysmal 184.5 rushing yards per game.

Tony Elliott grew accustomed to dominant defensive lines in his time at Clemson, as the Tigers consistently pummeled opposing offensive lines, highlighted by a 2018 starting unit that featured four 2019 NFL draft picks.

Elliott’s an offensive-minded coach, but his defensive line needs to improve substantially heading into year three of his tenure.
