Women's basketball coaching search commences as Balcomb resigns

Vanderbilt women's basketball coach Melanie Balcomb during the Commodores' win over Belmont at Memorial Gymnasium November 14, 2014.

Originally hired from Xavier in 2002, Balcomb led the Commodores to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, four Sweet 16 berths and three SEC Tournament titles in posting a 310-149 record during her 14 seasons at Vanderbilt. Recent slippage in performance, however, raised questions about Balcomb’s future as the ‘Dores failed to make the postseason each of the past two years while numerous players transferred out of the program.

“We had a constructive series of conversations about the program since the season concluded and Coach Balcomb has informed me that she has chosen to resign,” Williams said in a statement.
