Just 10 minutes before being selected first overall in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the junior shortstop helped lead his team to consecutive College World Series appearances.
Following a game-tying home run in the fourth inning, Swanson scored the game-winning run after hitting a leadoff double in the sixth inning in Vanderbilt’s 4-2 victory over Illinois.
Vanderbilt is now one of four to five SEC teams to advance to the College World Series, which begins June 13, joining Arkansas, Florida, LSU, and potentially Texas A&M. Miami and last season’s runner-up Virginia have also advanced to the final field of eight.
