3rd former Vanderbilt player found guilty in 2013 rape case

A jury on Friday convicted a former Vanderbilt football player charged along with three of his teammates in the 2013 gang rape of an unconscious female student.

Brandon Banks was found guilty of one count of aggravated rape and one count of aggravated sexual battery; he was found not guilty on five other counts.

Banks’ one count of aggravated rape carries a minimum prison sentence of 15 years. A sentencing date was set for Aug. 18.

Banks’ lawyer, Mark Scruggs, said he would possibly appeal after first asking the judge for leniency.

Two of Banks’ other former Vanderbilt teammates, Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey, already have been found guilty in the case.
