The Vancouver Whitecaps have found their Sheanon Williams replacement at right back, signing former DC United defender Sean Franklin through 2018. Franklin will likely serve as a backup, and competition, for Jake Nerwinski, who overtook Williams last season.
The 32-year-old Sean Franklin has been in Major League Soccer for 10 years, having accumulated 308 appearances, with 286 starts. He has two MLS Cup victories, two Supporters’ Shields, and was twice an all-star; the most recent being in 2014.
Franklin certainly will not be driving force at right back this season, but the Caps needed to find a veteran replacement to back-up Nerwinski and who could step in should Jake falter in his sophomore campaign or experience any setbacks with his injury in last season’s playoffs.
