Vancouver Canucks waive Sven Baertschi, Alex Biega and Nikolay Goldobin

Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning and head coach Travis Green knew difficult decisions were lying ahead of the Wednesday opener, and sure enough, tough roster moves were made.

On Monday morning, the team announced that they have waived fan favorite Sven Baertschi, Nikolay Goldobin and veteran blueliner Alex Biega — all “designated for assigment” to the Utica Comets.

A quick scroll through Canucks Twitter, and you’ll see plenty of outcry regarding the decision to waive Baertschi. The 26-year-old has displayed 20-goal potential (three seasons of 14-plus goals), but it hasn’t come to fruition yet.
