Ever since the Vancouver Canucks drafted gigantic Russian defenseman, Nikita Tryamkin, in the third round (66th overall) of the 2014 NHL entry draft, there has been equal parts mystery and intrigue surrounding him. Not much was known about the selection at the time but since then rumours have swirled and whispers of Tryamkin’s potential have reached the ears of Canucks fans.
Tryamkin’s arrival last season provided Canucks fans with much-needed excitement during a season of disappointments. Indeed, he showed up in Vancouver with lofty expectations placed upon him but rather than being cowed by such expectations of greatness, he stood even taller and announced he aims to be better than the man he is often compared to, fellow countryman and Boston Bruins defender, Zdeno Chara.
