Barring any surprises, Vancouver Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson should become the team’s first Calder Trophy winner since 1991-92, when franchise icon Pavel Bure won the award.
Pettersson leads all rookies in goals (27) and points (65). The Calder Trophy usually goes to the highest-scoring first-year player. Goalies rarely win the award — with Steve Mason being the last netminder to win it in 2008-09.
Since 2003-04, the only blueliners to win the Calder are Tyler Myers (2009-10), and Aaron Ekblad (2013-14). Luckily for Petterson, there aren’t any rookie goalies or blueliners who dominated at his level this season.
