It was, especially by recent standards a fairly wild and wooly Free Agency Day. John Tavares signing with the Leafs, the blowback over Jack Johnson leaving Columbus for Pittsburgh (it might be the ultimate Torts rant ever), and a fairly large number of signings across the league. In Vancouver, the needs were fairly clear. IF they sign someone, they would need to address one of two glaring problems: a) help on the defence (which is not particularly mobile, and challenged to say the least, at producing points) and b) more scoring depth. Given these parameters, anyone who has followed this team knew that it wasn’t going to end well.
