Iain MacIntyre: Rebuilding on the fly testing an impatient city’s patience

Exhibit A that nothing good happens when you lose is, yet again, the Vancouver Canucks, whose desultory 5-2 loss Saturday to the Toronto Maple Leafs/Marlies sparked two days of speculative media chatter that Willie Desjardins can’t coach his top players, winger Alex Burrows doesn’t want to be here and general manager Jim Benning can’t rebuild the team because owner Francesco Aquilini won’t let him.

Fortunately, the Canucks’ game Monday against the Minnesota Wild was available to spawn new material.

Somewhere along the way, conjecture became accepted as news, opinion as fact. But this isn’t the problem that it once posed for a public demanding to be informed because a lot of people now simply choose the facts they like, ignore the ones they don’t, and arrive at the conclusion they set out to find.
