Benning touts newest Canuck Etem’s speed, scoring potential

The Vancouver Canucks traded an under-performing first-round draft pick Friday and got another one in return.

The Canucks acquired winger Emerson Etem from the New York Rangers in exchange for Nicklas Jensen and a sixth-round draft pick in 2017.

The Canucks like Etem’s speed and hope he can rekindle some of the goal-scoring ability he demonstrated in three seasons with the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers.

One of those seasons was during Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins’ tenure with the Tigers.

“In our quest to add more speed to our team, he is a guy that is fast and at the junior level was a prolific goal-scorer,” Vancouver general manager Jim Benning said of Etem.
