What now? UTSA men’s basketball team finishes 5-27

SAN ANTONIO — The future of the UTSA men’s basketball program fell into uncertainty Tuesday with a blowout loss and a first-round exit from the Conference USA tournament.

The 12th-seeded Florida Atlantic Owls ousted No. 13 UTSA 82-58, bringing to an end the worst season in program history.

FAU (8-24) built leads into the 20s for much of the second half and completely throttled UTSA (5-27) in the tournament opener at Birmingham, Alabama.

In coming days, UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey is certain to face questions about her appraisal of 10th-year coach Brooks Thompson.

Thompson’s last four seasons have ended with records of 10-22, 8-22, 14-16 and now 5-27, the most losses in a season in the 35-year history of the program.
