SAN ANTONIO — First-year UTSA coach Frank Wilson opened spring football practice to the fans Friday morning and ran his players through a spirited, two-hour workout.
About 100 fans in sweatshirts and jackets braved chilly weather when the first whistle blew at 8 a.m.
Early on, Wilson called for the “Bird Cage” drill, in which players formed a ring around an open space in which two of their teammates engaged in one-on-one hitting.
“We’re letting the bird out of the cage,” Wilson said later.
During the drill, players forming the ring cheered and encouraged the two combatants taking the physical challenge.
