The first set was close, ever so close. The third set was just as close ... perhaps closer. The second set seemed to get away, just get away and float off into the desert sky.
No matter how close — or, in the second set, not so close — the result was the same. Western Kentucky defeated UTEP 3-0 in Conference USA volleyball Friday night in Memorial Gym.
The Miners were right there, within striking distance at 23-21 and 24-22 before falling 25-22 in the opening set. The Hilltoppers roared away with the second set 25-14. And then the Miners were right there again, tied at 23-23, before Western Kentucky closed the curtain 25-23.
