Cameasha Turner's remarkable personal story took another remarkable step Tuesday, as the former UTEP basketball star has been named one of nine finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
She and the other finalists will be honored by the NCAA at an awards dinner in Indianapolis on Oct. 16 when the winner will be announced.
Turner was one of 30 semifinalists from an initial field of 517 nominees. The award is for women whose collegiate careers are highlighted by achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.
Now a first-year law student at Notre Dame, Turner, one of 10 children raised by a single mother in inner-city Dallas, graduated from UTEP with a 4.
