The UTEP women's basketball team's usually astute sense of the moment didn't extend to its defense in a 76-74 overtime loss to UAB to open the Conference USA season.
A step ahead of the Miners much of the night, UAB shot 60 percent from the field, including a 3-pointer with 9 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to force overtime and a lead-taking layup with 30 seconds left in overtime.
That enabled the Blazers to win a game where UTEP took 25 more shots from the field while shooting 26 percent worse — the Miners shot 34 percent from the field.
