UTEP sent a stunned Marshall crowd of 6,781 fans out into the Huntington, W. Va., cold night air Saturday.
The Miners shot well, defended even better and rebounded with a fury to take a surprising 91-68 win over Marshall Saturday night in the Cam Henderson Arena. Marshall had been 11-0 at home this season and the Thundering Herd had been averaging 88.0 points a game.
But UTEP used a tenacious man-to-man defense early and closed with its scrambling point zone. The Miner defense switched on screens, allowing them to get out on Marshall's potent 3-point shooters, forcing them a foot or two or three beyond their normal shooting spots and perhaps disrupting their rhythm just a bit.
