Nowhere is the UTEP’s football team’s inconsistency more on display than in the single most decisive statistic in the game: turnovers.
The Miners were great against Boise, dreadful against New Mexico, good enough against Charlotte, poor against Louisiana Tech and the wins and losses shook out accordingly.
The big numbers on the bottom line are clearly unacceptable. Out of 132 FBS teams UTEP is 114th in turnover margin, 122nd in fumbles lost, 107th in interceptions thrown and 128th in total turnovers with 16.
UTEP is a four-point underdog Saturday in the Sun Bowl against Florida Atlantic, and the shortest path to an upset would be winning turnovers.
