Every two or three years, the UTEP football team revamps its defense, optimistically talking about how its new scheme fits its talent and will reverse its fortunes. Then two or three years later it repeats the cycle.
This defense looks like a keeper. Going against Southern Miss freshman quarterback Jake Lange making his first start, the Miner defense devoured Southern Miss, scoring a defensive touchdown and a safety in a 26-13 victory that moved them to 5-1.
After winning five games in its previous five years, UTEP is now one win from bowl eligibility.
How it happened for the UTEP Miners
After putting up 302 yards of offense and 14 points in the first half, including 182 rushing yards, the Miners didn't get a first down in the third quarter while growing the lead.
