The UTEP safeties are expected to be a bedrock of the defense. Bret Bloomquist/El Paso Times
Even in the worst of times — and strictly from a defensive standpoint 2017 wasn’t all that bad for the UTEP football team — the Miners have been rich in safeties.
Thus it makes a certain degree of sense that in a season where they should be as good as ever at the position, they are going to base with three of them.
Developing depth at safety is on the to-do list this spring, but at the top, with veterans like junior Michael Lewis (six starts last year), senior Kahani Smith (seven starts) and senior Adrian Hynson, this once again is a spot UTEP can take a big degree of confidence in.
